Official reports from organizations and institutions dedicated to media freedom are devastating. A serious, global decline in press freedom has been recorded. Since the beginning of this year, a massive trend of journalist layoffs has swept the globe—from the largest, most renowned media conglomerates to smaller outlets facing severe financial and editorial crises. As journalists lose their jobs, the voices of truth are increasingly silenced.
According to all official statements, especially those marking World Press Freedom Day, the obstruction of truth directly threatens democracy. Beyond political structures and the overall geopolitical climate, media freedom is endangered by poor business models, unsustainable operational systems, corrupt influences, and criminal lobbying, as well as a profound loss of public trust.
Consumers have largely lost faith in the information provided by official media channels, turning instead to bloggers, YouTubers, influencers, and alternative sources on social media. Unverified information can be dangerous to society, undermining peace and stability. Consequently, institutions are fighting to restore trust in journalism to its rightful level.
The state of media freedom remains volatile, fluctuating between the implementation of true democratic values and the manipulation of political power that transforms national media into propaganda machines. Experts openly state that without press freedom, there is no true democracy. Journalists, as messengers of truth, are the guardians of a democratic society—tasked with investigating, asking the right questions, and informing the public about corruption and other actions that directly threaten the freedom of citizens.
In our three-part series titled “Press Freedom – Unfiltered Voices: The Testimony of Truth,” we interviewed journalists, editors, and advocates for press freedom and human rights from every continent. They bear witness to the reality in their home countries.
