ICJ Declaration on the Official Status of Professional Journalists

ICJ NetworkICJ Declaration on the Official Status of Professional Journalists

We are witnessing ever-increasing pressures on journalists, leading to wrongful arrests and even the tragic loss of lives among reporters operating in conflict zones and crisis areas. While high-ranking officials remain heavily protected in their positions, journalists—the ultimate guardians of democracy—face systemic barriers that prevent them from delivering truth of vital public interest.

It is precisely for this reason that I have decided to launch an initiative designed to completely and permanently change this reality. Under this framework, journalists granted this official status will hold a special permit and an official shield (badge) validating their authority, ensuring maximum protection on the ground—strictly equivalent to any other protected public servant or official person.

I proudly present to you the ICJ Declaration, a decisive instrument created so that we may join forces and secure the global recognition and safety that journalists rightfully deserve.”
